The Love and Valor Film is based on the book Love and Valor - Intimate Civil War Letters Between Captain Jacob and Emeline Ritner, edited by Charles F. Larimer, which is a rare and fascinating compilation of romantic and extremely articulate letters between Captain Jacob Ritner and his wife Emeline during the Civil War.

Jacob Ritner of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa initially enlisted as part of Lincoln's first call for 75,000 volunteers, then re-enlisted and remained in Grant's and Sherman's Army of the Tennessee, all the way through to the end of the war.

Through amazing good fortune and perseverance, Charles F. Larimer, great great grandson of Jacob Ritner and his wife Emeline, tracked down both Jacob and Emeline's letters and other family correspondence from the Civil War era.

The Love and Valor movie tells the story of a Union soldier who longs to return to his wife and family in Iowa, but not before he helps end slavery, preserve the Union and win the war. His wife struggles to raise four small children and manage the family farm. As many women in her community become widowed from the war, she hopes for Jacob's return some day.

After two years of pre-production, filming began on the Love and Valor movie on September 17, 2004 at Usher's Ferry Historic Village located on the outskirts of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In early November we had our second shoot, which included one day at Spindrift Farm, located just north of Iowa City, and then another day back at Usher's Ferry.
